Distant Stars
Distant Stars traces its roots back to 1974, when my father took me to Americana Music in Dayton, Ohio, to buy my very first synthesizer—a Univox MiniKorg K2. Inspired by the sounds from Joe Walsh’s Barnstorm record, I spent countless hours in my basement exploring this remarkable new instrument. It truly felt like an entirely new musical world.
The song came to life after I routed the MiniKorg through an MXR delay pedal and recorded multiple passes on my TEAC four-track tape recorder. That spontaneous session became one of my most treasured compositions, capturing the excitement of discovering new sounds and the endless creative possibilities of early synthesizers.
More than fifty years later, I’ve returned to Distant Stars and recreated it exactly as it was originally performed, preserving the melodies, phrasing, and spirit of the 1974 recording while using modern hardware synthesizers. The result is both a faithful tribute to its origins and a fresh recording that celebrates the joy of musical exploration.
